Kohinga Kupu

Ko Tātou Kaupapa

Te Ara o te Kupu

Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro nōnā te ngahere, ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga nōnā te ao.

The forest belongs to the bird who feasts on the Miro berry, the world belongs to the bird who feasts on education.

Tēnā koe, nau mai ki a Kohinga Kupu.

Kohinga Kupu is a tool to help with vocabulary acquisition in te reo Māori.

Use of AI

Kohinga Kupu relies on AI to determine kupu that are thematically associated with the searched domain, and to generate simple active sentences. Māori is a rich and multilayered language where words may have varied and metaphorical uses and meanings. AI may return false information so it is important that you double-check the responses. Links for each kupu are provided to the two main online te reo Māori dictionaries to facilitate this, Te Aka, and Paekupu.

Language Research & Word Clusters

Research into language acquisition underscores the importance of learning words in clusters rather than in isolation. Semantic mapping and thematic grouping help learners create mental hooks that make recall more intuitive [1]. By presenting kupu within a conceptual domain, we mimic the natural way our brains organise information.

This project is an exploration of how AI can assist in this clustering process, providing learners with a starting point for their own research into the nuances of te reo Māori.

Tūmataiti / Privacy

Kohinga Kupu collects no data from users. The results for your searches are cached by our server for one hour to help with efficiencies.
